Usually, the first method of treatment is a steroid course, which may involve steroid tablets or a combination of the two. Steroids can make smaller the polyps in about 7-10 days; however the shrinkage will only take place for as long as the steroids are used. Once the steroids are stopped, the polyps will start growing again, and typically to a larger size than they were previously.
The other problem is that, steroids can only be used for the short term, as they do create side effects such as bad heads, nose bleeds, sore throats, poor vision, and an increased risk of glaucoma and cataract formation. Steroids if given to children with nasal polyps can cause stunted growth. Another problem with steroid use is, weight gain often occurs. If you have not started steroid therapy, DON’T! This will save you from becoming entrapped in a difficuly cycle where you’ll have to count on steroids to keep the polyps down.
